1. Understand the B2B model on Alibaba and how this e-commerce platform works

Before analyzing buyer behavior, it is necessary to understand that Alibaba operates on a B2B (Business-to-Business) model - that is, transactions are between businesses and businesses, not between individuals and sellers. Characteristics of B2B model on Alibaba:

  • Transactions are often large quantity and high value.

  • The buyer is a distributor, importer, wholesaler or international trader.

  • Purchasing decisions depend on the quality, reputation and supply capacity of the supplier.

  • Alibaba plays the role of connecting - authenticating - supporting safe transactions through the verification and guaranteed payment system (Trade Assurance).

2. Buyer's search journey on Alibaba

Buyers on Alibaba often go through 5 main stages in their product search journey:

  • Identify needs: they clearly know the product they need (for example: “Vietnam cinnamon stick”, “organic coffee beans”).

  • Search for products on Alibaba Search: enter keywords in the main search bar.

  • Filter results: use filters by price, MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity), certification, supply region, or supplier type (Verified Supplier).

  • Compare and review: buyers view multiple vendors, read descriptions, check photos, videos, certifications, reviews, and response rates.

  • Send request for quotation (RFQ) or contact directly: after selecting a few potential candidates.

Understanding this journey helps businesses adjust product presentation to get on the buyer's shortlist.

3. Keywords – the first factor in search behavior

On Alibaba, buyers use product description keywords to search. Vietnamese businesses need to understand that the way they search is not the same as the way they write. Types of keywords that buyers often use:

  • By specific product: “Vietnamese rice exporter”, “frozen shrimp supplier”, “bamboo straw factory”

  • By business type: “OEM skincare manufacturer”, “private label coffee supplier”

This means that by simply optimizing content and maintaining regular activity, businesses can achieve high rankings without advertising.

Search behavior varies by industry. Here are some common behavioral patterns:

  • Agricultural products - food: buyers often search by country + product type (for example: Vietnam cashew nuts, Vietnamese coffee beans).

  • Handicrafts: they search by material or style (handmade bamboo baskets, eco home decor).

  • OEM/ODM products: buyers pay attention to the keywords “manufacturer”, “customized”, “private label”.

  • Industrial products: they search by technical standards or HS code.

Vietnamese businesses need to customize product titles by industry to match the search behavior of each customer group.

6. The influence of images and videos on search decisions

B2B buyers on Alibaba don't just read – they observe images and videos to evaluate a supplier's professionalism. According to internal statistics from Alibaba, booths with product videos will receive 35% more quote requests than booths without videos. How to optimize image content:

  • The main image is clear and shows the entire product.

  • Additional photos describe details, packaging, and production process.

  • Videos showcasing the packaging or factory process help increase credibility.

  • Beautiful and honest images are the "quality signal" that Alibaba algorithms and buyers prioritize.

7. Impact of transparent information on purchasing behavior

Buyers tend to choose suppliers with clear and transparent information. Important factors include:

  • Company Profile is complete and verified.

  • The address is clear, with pictures of the actual factory.

  • Contact information (email, phone number, website) is transparent.

  • International certifications (ISO, HACCP, FDA, CE, SGS...).
